Diplomatic Club History

In the early 1920's some Romanian personalities of the epoch founded the Sport Association "COUNTRY CLUB", that would further become Diplomatic Club.

There was first a very modern golf course for that time and than more sport facilities were offered.

The club location was about tens of hectares and lied on the both Herastrau Lake banks.

In 1929 the "Country Club” Association got legal Romanian Status that was registered at Ilfov Tribunal. From that time on the Association activity was under the auspices of Queen Maria and the presidency of Prince Nicolae, thus appreciated as an elite club of the time.

The association has a flourishing activity: the golf course becomes one of the most modern in central Europe, organises national and international tournaments, the “COUNTRY CLUB” is registered in the Annual Book of Clubs of the kind, thus confirming its prestige. Tennis courts, the swimming area on Herastrau Lake, the swimming pool in the open and the other services offered to its members enhanced its attractiveness.

From 1949 the association starts its activity under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Status changes and a new Governing Board of foreign diplomats are elected.

In 1975 the perimeter of the Association reduces from 18 hectares to 6 hectares, i.e. strictly the land with premises, the golf course being transformed to agriculture area.

After the 1977 earthquake that damaged the main premises which was also a monument architecture, the restoration began and new tennis courts were built, the swimming pool was restored, new services were offered by opening a restaurant and two duty-free shops.

From 1994, according to the civil sentence no.20/04.02.l994, the Association “COUNTRY CLUB” turns to Diplomatic Club Bucharest, has a new Status and a new Governing Board consisting of 13 members: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mayor of Bucharest and Head of National Protocol are members of right, 6 foreign ambassadors representing geographical areas as well as outstanding businessmen and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials.

In keeping with the Government decision no 1059/29.10.1996, Romanian Government gave in administration to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs an area of 19.41 hectares with specific destination of Diplomatic Club activities.

Nowadays the Diplomatic Club offers various sport facilities: golf course and driving range, 8 tennis courts (6 in dross and 2 in plastics), soccer field, basket-ball field, Ping-Pong tables, outdoor swimming pool, children playing area. There is a restaurant with several halls of diverse capacities where we organise receptions, cocktails congresses, symposiums, products displays, etc. all at a high standard with a highly professional staff.

Lately a significant modernisation and restoration club facilities project has been outviewed, its goals, being part of the “Urbanisation Zone Plan".
